How To Make Garlic And Onion White Pizza At Home

Are you tired of traditional pizza with red sauce and mozzarella cheese? Why not try something different? This homemade white pizza is topped with a homemade, Alfredo-like cheese sauce, plenty of cheddar cheese, garlic and sautéed onions. Once you have a slice, you'll definitely be reaching for seconds.

Ingredients (for the crust):

  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable or olive oil

Ingredients (for the sauce):

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese, shredded
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 pinch nutmeg

Ingredients (for the toppings):

  • 1 medium onion
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable or olive oil
  • 1 ½ cups cheddar cheese, shredded

To make the crust, begin by combining the water, yeast and sugar in a bowl. Let the yeast dissolve; the mixture should start foaming. Once the yeast is fully dissolved, add the flour, oil, and salt. Stir well, making sure the flour is completely worked into the liquid. Then, turn the dough out onto a floured countertop. Knead by hand for 8 – 10 minutes, or until the dough becomes smooth and stretchy.

Place the dough in a covered, greased bowl. Let it sit on the counter for at least an hour – until the dough has doubled in size. When the dough has risen to twice its original size, remove the lid and punch the dough down.

Form the dough into a ball, and place it on a pizza pan. Cover it lightly with plastic wrap. This dough needs to rest for 20 minutes while you prepare the sauce and toppings.

To make the sauce, begin by melting the butter in a saucepan. When the butter is melted, add the flour. Stir to make a roux, and cook over low heat while stirring constantly for 2 minutes. Slowly stir in the milk. Bring the mixture to a simmer while stirring constantly. The sauce should thicken as it simmers. Stir in the Parmesan cheese until it is completely melted, and then remove the sauce from the heat and set it aside.

Heat the 2 tablespoons of oil in a skillet, and add the onions. Sauté until they begin to brown around the edges, and then add the garlic. Sauté gently for another minute. Do not let the garlic brown.

Once the dough has rested for 20 minutes, stretch it out into a 12-inch circle. Top it with your cheese sauce, followed by the cheddar cheese and sautéed onions and garlic.
